The Institute (IOCB) was founded on January 1, 1960 by the reorganization of the original Institute of Chemistry of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (created as one of the establishing institutes of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1952). The founder of the Institute, late prof. Frantisek Sorm (1913 - 1980) had been the director of the Institute till 1969 when he was dismissed from the political reasons. The past directors of the Institute were prof. Vlastimil Herout, dr. Karel Sebesta, and prof. Karel Martinek. Since 1994 the Institute is directed by RNDr. Antonin Holy, DrSc. whose scientific orientation is medicinal chemistry (analogs of nucleic acid components).
